The insertion of the intraocular lens depends on the type of lens utilised. It is essential to obtain experience of the type of injection system to be used prior to the actual surgery. The various injector systems include push or wind down mechanisms. It is always important to check that the intraocular lens has been loaded correctly otherwise damage can occur to the lens and if this is inserted into the eye, will need to be explanted. The delivery of the lens should proceed without resistance as this can indicate a problem with the lens or the injector system. With certain styles of lenses and particularly if the power of the lens is greater than 26 dioptres (and hence relatively thicker), the wound may need to be extended to accommodate a wider cartridge.
